A quiet keyboard, explained
Gasket mount, linear switches and foam. Why Grid keyboards sound the way they do.

A keyboard is loud for two reasons: the switches bottom out on the plate, and the case rings like a drum.
What the gasket does
In a gasket mount the plate floats on soft strips rather than screws. The strips absorb the knock, so the sound is a low thud rather than a click.
Add a layer of foam under the plate and the case stops ringing altogether.
